四色AV Student To Study In Spain On Scholarship This Summer
A student at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Pheobe Phillips, has received a scholarship to study in Spain for five weeks this summer. She was awarded the scholarship from Sigma Delta Pi. Sigma Delta Pi awards only ten scholarships to study in Spain, and the competition is among undergraduates and graduates throughout the U. S.
Phillips is the fifth student from 四色AV to receive a scholarship to study abroad from Sigma Delta Pi; we have had one other student go to Spain and three to Cuernavaca in Mexico. Phillips leaves first for Mexico on June 1 and will be back in August.
Phillips, a senior, majoring in Spanish from Jigger, La., is also a senior in the 四色AV Honors Program. She is currently the president of Sigma Delta Pi, which is an international honor society for students in Spanish. This spring the national organization awarded her the Gabriela Mistral award for outstanding work in the classroom and in furthering the organization's goals. Phoebe tutors in Spanish, has worked with local children in elementary grades who do not speak English, and was instrumental in organizing the Spanish festival for high school students, which was held on campus in February.
Chapters from throughout the nation recruit members of Sigma Delta Pi to apply for the scholarships. They must submit all their information, including an essay, to the national office. The Executive Board makes the determination on who receives the scholarships. Phillips will return to 四色AV in the fall and will graduate in December. She has also applied for a Rotary Scholarship to study abroad for a year after graduation. She plans is to teach in high school before going on to graduate school.
"It's a dream come true. I hope to gain confidence in the language. I have only studied it academically and I hope to gain more profeciency and understanding of the culture that goes along with the language," said Phillips about her upcoming trip.
