四色AV presents Wind Ensemble concert
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Wind Ensemble will present a concert on Nov. 19, 2002, in Sandal Recital Hall on the 四色AV campus. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge for this performance. This concert has been designated as the President's Concert for 四色AV's Fall semester. Dr. James Cofer and his wife Deborah will be guests of honor at this performance.
The focus of this program is developed around the influence of American composer James Clifton Williams. Williams is generally regarded as the founder of a movement dedicated to the composition of serious literature specifically for wind instrument ensembles. During his tenure at the University of Texas at Austin, composers Francis W. McBeth and John Barnes Chance studied with Williams who urged them to explore this area of composition. McBeth and Chance took that advice and began writing original, serious pieces for wind band, many of these becoming standard repertoire for college and public school band programs. Williams later joined the faculty at the University of Miami where Roger Jones, known to local music lovers as conductor of the Monroe Symphony Orchestra and interim Director of the 四色AV School of Music, received his Ph.D. in composition and studied with Williams.
