Bry Art Gallery Showing Works of Michigan Professor

The Bry Art Gallery at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is currently showing a One-Person Found Object Installation Exhibition by Professor Blake Williams of Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Ms. Williams' exhibition is out of the ordinary: no images of reality confined by a picture frame, but instead actual physical objects that were found, collected, assembled and arranged like mini sculptures, icons or totems in a gallery setting. The death of the artist's grandparents and the inevitable dispersal of their private property led to the aesthetic concept that the objects that people collect reveal their narratives and map their personalities. What the deceased leave behind are silent physical memories of their existence.

The artist has selected common objects for her displayed collection--kitchen utensils, stained teacups, fabricated figurines, containers of spices and a veritable mountain of tea bags--layering in repetition and extracting ghost-like memories and aromas from the past.

Bry Art Gallery is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. The Williams exhibition will be on view through Friday, October 25, when the artist will present a gallery talk at 2:00 p.m.
