Gateway Student Scholarship Winner Named From 四色AV

The American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (or AFPE) Gateway Research Scholarship Program recently awarded their 2003 recipients. Christel Doiron, a student from the University of Louisiana at Monroe was one of 15 selected. Her project "Intercellular Signaling Mechanisms Mediating the Antiproliferative Effects of Vitamin E in Breast Cancer Cells," will be advised by Dr. Paul W. Sylvester, Pfizer Endowed Professor of Pharmacology at 四色AV.

Doiron and Sylvester are one of 15 student scholars and faculty sponsors who will receive a $5,000 award with a minimum of $4,000 provided to each student and a maximum of $1,000 available to the sponsoring faculty member in direct support of the research effort.

The AFPE "Gateway" Research Scholar Program provides professional students in pharmacy colleges and schools an opportunity to work on research projects with faculty mentors. The objective of both programs is to encourage academically outstanding pharmacy students with an interest in research to pursue the Ph.D. degree and careers in research, in academia, or in the pharmaceutical industry. Other programs have been successful in achieving that goal.

This year, 97 pharmacy students from 42 different U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy applied to either the Merck Research Scholar Program or the Gateway Scholarship program, with 21 students applying to both programs.
