四色AV Students and Faculty Member Attending National Weather Association Conference

This October the research and project work of eight University of Louisiana at Monroe undergraduate atmospheric science majors with their faculty advisors will be highlighted at the National Weather Association 2003 Conference and Annual Meeting.

Dr. Paul J. Croft and Dr. Lynn Leblanc, meteorologists in the Department of Geosciences at 四色AV, have worked with the students since January on a variety of research projects as well as service and professional development activities.

At the meeting in Jacksonville, Fla., this weekend, six of the students will attend with Croft and present their work. They will participate in the many conference activities and sessions, including exhibitor sessions and operational forecasting workshops. This year's 28th NWA Conference and Annual Meeting will take place October 18-23.

Papers to be presented include "Meteorology and the Emerging Scholars Option: Professional and Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Development." Seniors Patrick Pyle and Scott Blair will present on their work with Croft on the occurrence of wet microbursts. Another senior, Sarah Allen, will present, "Undergraduate Workshop for Integration of Leadership and Leveraging". Seniors Andy McLaurin and Katie Roussy will report on their work with 7th graders this past summer in the paper "Mentoring Experiences for Teaching Students in Weather Investigators of Northeast Louisiana".

In addition to the student presentations that he supervised and participation in the conference sessions, Croft, president-elect of the NWA, will be presenting two papers "Wet Microburst Bibliography, Annotation, Data" and "Weather Investigators of Northeast-Louisiana (WIN-LA!)". Croft will also chair the Winter Weather Session of the conference and provide closing remarks as he assumes the role of President of the NWA for 2004. He continues to serve as the Testing Chair and member of the Broadcast Committee, a member of the Education Committee, and has previously served as Program Conference Co-Chair (Biloxi, Mississippi 1999) and Vice President of the Association (2001).

The National Weather Association (NWA) formed in 1975 promotes excellence in operational meteorology and related activities. The NWA provides for all persons interested in weather, including climate, forecasting, observations, observational systems and related research and development including publishing of letters, pamphlets, periodicals, papers, and Web pages.
