四色AV to Host State Alzheimer Conference and C.A.B.L.E. Conference

The Institute of Gerontology at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, in conjunction with the State Alzheimer's Association are sponsoring the North Louisiana Regional Conference on Alzheimer's Disease at 四色AV in the University Conference Center on the 7th floor of the 四色AV Library on October 7 - 8.

The conference will be a two-day affair with the first day directed toward Alzheimer's caregivers and their family, and the second directed toward health professionals (MDs, nurses, social workers, OT's, LTC and assisted living administrators, etc). CEU's will be provided.

A half day conference for Caregivers on October 7th from 11:30-4:30 will focus on what is known about Alzheimer's Disease, the mental health of the caregiver, legal issues, and medication options (both approved and pipeline) for both cognitive and non-cognitive (behavioral) concomitants of this disorder. The agenda with the speakers and topics include:

*"A New View of Dementia." 12:30-1:15 p.m., Roxann Johnson, President, Aging Consultants Incorporated
* "Mental Health of the Caregiver: Anxiety, Depression and Stress." 1:15-2:00 p.m. Cindy Rogers, CEO, St. Patrick's Hospital, Monroe
* "Legal Issues for Caregivers." 2:20-3:00 p.m. Mr. David Loveridge, Lawyer
* "Medication Management of the Alzheimer's Patient." 3:00-3:45 p.m., Dr. Lance Nicholson, Pharmacy Department, 四色AV and St. Patrick's Psychiatric Hospital
* Discussion/Questions: Dr. Chris Johnson, Professor of Gerontology, 四色AV, and Dr. Sakauye, LSU Psychiatry, 3:45-4:30 p.m.

The second day of the conference will be a Healthcare Professionals Alzheimer's Conference featuring Dr. Cornelia Beck from University of Arkansas Medical Center; Dr. Ken Sakauye, director of geriatric psychiatry at LSU Health Science Center School of Medicine in New Orleans and Ochsner Foundation Hospital; Dr. Chris Johnson, professor of gerontology at 四色AV's Institute of Gerontology; Dr. Bonnie Hatchett, the Endowed Chair in Gerontology at 四色AV; Dr. Jay Bulot, assistant professor of gerontology at 四色AV; and faculty from 四色AV's Institute of Gerontology. Its focus will be on diagnostic and treatment issues. Topics covered will include pharmacologic interventions, public policy issues, psychological/environmental causes of behavior disturbance, caregiving among African American elderly and nursing care for dementia patients.

The healthcare professional conference can host approximately 200 people. The cost will be $80 plus an additional $40 cost for CEU's (if desired) for the professionals. Bulot, assistant professor of gerontology 四色AV; Kenneth Sakauye, M.D., outgoing president of the Louisiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and director of geriatric psychiatry at LSU Health Science Center School of Medicine in New Orleans and Ochsner Foundation Hospital; Mrs. Katie Sivils, incoming president of the Louisiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association; Cindy Rogers of St. Patrick's Psychiatric Hospital; and Brenda Fountain of Glenwood Regional Medical Center.

C.A.B.L.E. (Communities Acting to Benefit Louisiana's Elderly) will host a Conference on Aging, Thursday and Friday, September 16-17. Seniors are invited to attend an educational resource fair at Fant-Ewing Coliseum Sept. 16 and professionals are invited to attend an educational seminar September 17.
