Reception Held honoring the Mary E. and Darrell L. Calhoun Endowed Chair in Pharmacology

A reception was held Monday, February 2, in the Conference Center on the 7th floor of the 四色AV Library to recognize Dr. Girish Shah, the Mary E. and Darrell L. Calhoun Endowed Chair in Pharmacology. Prior to his arrival at 四色AV in September 2003, Dr. Shah was Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at Texas Tech University. Dr. Shah's research is involved with the role of calcitonin in prostate cancer.

The 四色AV College of Business Administration and West Monroe Chamber to co-host the 2004 Northeast Louisiana Business Showcase

The West Monroe Chamber and the 四色AV College of Business Administration (CBA) are co-hosting the 2004 Northeast Louisiana Business Showcase on March 4th at the West Monroe Convention Center. The showcase is a one-day business-to-business trade show that is designed to give businesses an opportunity to promote their products and services and provide several scholarships to CBA students. 四色AV students will be working with the Chamber on this event.

 

Graduate Students Receive Grants

Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate student, Harish Parihar, has been awarded a $600 travel grant to attend the American Chemical Society Meeting in Anaheim in April 2004. Harish works under the direction of Dr. Ron Hill, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry.

Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate student, Kedar Vaidya recently received a $560 travel grant to present his research at the Experimental Biology 2004 Meeting in Washington, DC in April. Dr. Dean Reardon, assistant professor of pharmacology, is Kedar's faculty advisor.

四色AV's National Pan-Hellenic Council Spring Informational

The 四色AV National Pan-Hellenic Council will host their Spring Informational on February 5th at 5 p.m. in the SUB Auditorium. Students must register for the event and there is a $10 application fee. Applications are available in SUB 214. The NPHC groups participating in the informational are Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Omega Phi Psi Fraternity, Inc.

四色AV's softball team hosts "Mardi Gras Classic"

四色AV's softball team will be hosting its annual "Mardi Gras Classic" beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Lady Indian Field.

The tournament will open with Southeastern Conference power Kentucky taking on the Sun Belt conference foe Louisiana Lafayette at 8 a.m., followed by a duel between Atlantic Coast Conference power Georgia Tech and new Division I member Gardner-Webb at 11 a.m.

四色AV will finish the day with a double header, taking on UK at 3 p.m. followed by a date with Ga. Tech at 5 p.m. The tournament will resume Sunday at 9 a.m. with Ga. Tech and UK. The Lady Indians will wrap up the tournament Sunday afternoon taking on GW at 3 p.m. followed by a duel with in state rival ULL at 5 p.m.

 

2nd Annual "Bumpin' on the Bayou"

The College of Business Administration will hosts its 2nd Annual "Bumpin' on the Bayou" Friday, Feb. 6th, from 7 p.m. until midnight. The event will be held at the West Monroe Convention Center. A silent auction will be held from 7-9 p.m. There will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, an open bar and music. Tickets are $35 per person or $280 for a reserved table of eight. Proceeds will benefit 四色AV's CBA. Tickets can be purchased at the Monroe or West Monroe Chamber of Commerce. Call 342-1100 for more information

 

四色AV Continuing Education Offers Classes for February

The Division of Continuing Education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe will be offering several classes in February.

Two-Step Country and Western Dance will be taught on Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. in room 122 of the 四色AV Brown Annex starting Feb. 2 through March 1. Classes will be taught by Ed Love and will cost $60 per couple.

The Small Business Development Center will offer "Starting and/or Financing a Small Business" twice in February. The seminars will be held Feb. 5 and 19 from 6-8 p.m. in room 2-105 of the Administration Building. The seminars are free but pre-registration is required.

A Pre-Licensing Course for Driving Motor Vehicles will be offered twice in February on Feb. 7 and Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room 100 of Stubbs Hall. Cost of the class is $25 and payment must be made by the Thursday before the class. Birth certificate and picture ID with signature are required. Students must be 17 years of age or older. Course will include highway regulatory laws, DWI laws, alcohol effects, driver responsibility and defensive driving.

Anna Ray will teach beginning Crochet on Thursdays beginning Feb. 12. Classes will be held in room 135 in Strauss Hall from 6-8 p.m. and will cost $50 plus $5 for supplies. Students will learn various stitches such as slip-stitch, single crochet and double crochet.

A dental seminar "Focus on Dentistry," sponsored by the 四色AV Dental Hygiene Department, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for three sessions starting Feb. 13, March 5 and April 2. The Feb. 13 session will be held at the Atrium while the March 5 and April 2 sessions will be held at the 四色AV Library Conference Center. Cost of the seminar, which includes lunch, is $690 for dentists, $330 for hygienists and $150 for dental staff. Pre-registration is required.

Floral arrangement will be taught by Janet Colvin on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. starting Feb. 12. The five two-hour sessions cost $350 and all materials will be provided. Classes will be held in room 132C of Stubbs Hall. Students will learn floral design, techniques and home decorating using silk materials.

New Bench Honors Deans of Former College of Liberal Arts

The 四色AV English Department recently donated a bench to the campus in honor of the three deans who served in the former College of Liberal Arts. The bench, which sits at the northeast corner of the Administration building, has etched on it the names of the three deans and the dates of their service to the university: Dean William Hammond (1931-1968), Dean Frank Morgan (1968-93), and Dean Carlos Fandal (1993-2002). They were the only three Deans to serve the former College of Liberal Arts (now Arts and Sciences) over the University's seventy-year history. Fandal currently serves as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Cheerleaders Lead the Way

The National Championship 四色AV Cheerleaders will be the parade marshals for the Monroe Mardi Gras Parade to be held on Feb. 14th.
