四色AV Offers Career Service Events

This spring, 四色AV is offering career days and workshops in order to help students prepare for the workforce.

四色AV's Consumer Sciences Receives Donation

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences recently received a donation in the amount of $500 from Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Psi, to purchase math manipulatives and supplies for the 四色AV Child Development Center.

 

Biology Student Receives Sigma Xi Grant

Sharmilee Sawant, a student at the University of Louisiana at Monroe has been selected to receive a Grant In Aid of Research from Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. Sawant was one of 300 students selected out of 1,300 that applied for the grant. The $500 grant will fund her study of type-two diabetes in rats. The aim of her study is to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of type-two diabetes by studying its effect on rats. She is currently involved in the project and expects it to take up to a year to complete.

Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society is a non-profit membership society of approximately 75,000 scientists and engineers, including almost 200 Nobel Laureates. Members are elected to the Society because of their research achievements or potential. Sigma Xi has 516 chapters at universities and colleges, government laboratories and industry research centers. In addition to publishing American Scientist, the Sigma Xi holds forums on critical issues at the intersection of science and society and sponsors a variety of programs supporting honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy and the public understanding of science.

In addition to the Sigma-Xi grant, Sawant has also received $18,000 dollars in a fellowship from the American Heart association to aid in her studies here at 四色AV.

 

Speech and Debate Forum's Speech Night

The 四色AV Speech and Debate Forum presented "Speech Night," a free event held in Spyker Theatre on Tuesday, March 2nd. The program consisted of the Forum presenting selections from their award-winning season, which saw the team win 31 awards, including 5 championships.

The 四色AV Speech and Debate Forum is open to any undergraduate student, and no prior experience is required. If you are interested in finding out more about the team, please contact Bob Alexander at 342-1462.

 

Arts and Sciences Showcases Presentations

The college of Arts and Sciences will showcase several presentations and events, which speak to the theme of diversity, in the arts, in society, in science and nature.

The first presentation will take place Thursday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Airway Science Auditorium. The speaker will be Dr. Pamela Higgins Saulsberry, Professor of Social Work. Her topic will be: "The Cultural Diversity Dilemma."

A reception will follow immediately after the presentation.

 

Alpha Lambda Delta Initiates Members

The national honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta, will be initiating freshmen students who have made a 3.5 plus GPA for a minimum of 12 academic credit hours in fall, 2003. The initiation will be held Wednesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. in the Conference Center on the 7th floor of the 四色AV Library.

Students who meet the required GPA are welcome to join Alpha Lambda Delta. Students may call 342-3486 for further information.
