Theatreworks Season Opens With Pulitzer Winner

The TheatreWorks四色AV 2004-2005 season of plays opens September 23rd with Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Three Tall Women. Additional performances are scheduled Sept. 24th and 25th, and again Sept. 30th to Oct. 2nd in Spyker Theatre on the campus of The University of Louisiana at Monroe. All performances begin at 7:30 sharp.

Three Tall Women tells the tale of "A," a frail and perhaps senile 92 year-old woman. She resists the assistance of "B," her companion-caretaker, and "C," her new young lawyer. She cascades from regal and charming to vicious and wretched as she wonders about and remembers her life: her husband, and their cold, passionless marriage; her son, and their estrangement. How did she become like this? Who is she?

In a startling coup-de-theatre, Act Two finds the three women are now really stages of the life of womankind: the imperious old woman, the regal matron, and the young woman of twenty six. Life, memories, and reminiscences pondered in the first act are now unceremoniously examined, questioned, accepted or not, but at last, understood.

The New Yorker called Three Tall Women "beautiful and enduring." The Post called it "an extraordinarily brilliant new play." And The New York Times suggested, "Edward Albee offers a new play so good it can only exist on the stage. A perfect illustration of why theatre is an indispensable art." Albee, already celebrated for, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and A Delicate Balance, has created a masterwork of humanity.

Reservations for Three Tall Women will be accepted beginning Monday, September 20th and can be made by calling the TheatreWorks四色AV Box Office at 318-342-1414. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 seniors, $6 children and free to 四色AV students, faculty, and staff.
