The SBDC will offer free two-hour workshops titled "Evaluating and Financing Your Business Idea" for individuals who are interested in determining the feasibility of their idea, are planning to start or have recently started a small business, want to expand their businesses, are interested in obtaining a small business loan or want to learn more about planning and management.

One such workshop will occur on Saturday, April 23 from 9-11 a.m. at the 四色AV Administration Building, Room 2-105. Another will take place on Thursday, April 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the St. Joseph Police Jury Building.

Topics of discussion include business feasibility, business planning, marketing strategy development, financial planning, loan process/applications and sources of funds for small business start-up and expansion.

On Tuesday, April 26 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., the SBDC will present "Business Basics/Recordkeeping/Employment Tax - Part II" at the 四色AV Administration Building, Room 2-52. There is no charge to attend.

"Part II" will explore selected topics in federal taxes for your small business. This workshop includes a discussion of tax laws, common IRS schedules, business deductions and tax computation for small business owners. Topics of discussion include preparing the Schedule C (sole proprietorship) tax return for your small business; tax laws affecting individuals and small businesses; home offices, depreciation, car expenses, travel and other allowable deductions; how to handle capital gains, wages and special situations related to business ownership and other topics. A representative from the Department of Labor will discuss labor issues of importance to small business.

In partnership with the Louisiana Society of Enrolled Agents (LSEA), a member of LSEA will present the workshop. The speaker has volunteered to present and is enrolled to practice before the IRS.

On Tuesday, May 3 from 6-8 p.m., the SBDC will offer "Should Your Business Be a Proprietorship? Partnership? Corporation? LLC?" at the 四色AV Administration Building, Room 2-49. There is no charge to attend.

This workshop examines the subject that small business people often wonder what legal form of organization is appropriate for them. They hear things and cannot separate fact from fiction about the benefits different legal forms would provide them. The workshop will provide a basic understanding of the various forms (proprietorship, partnership, corporation, S Corporation and limited liability company) related to their specific situation. Time will be provided for questions and answers.

The speaker, Elizabeth Guerriero, is a business law professor at 四色AV and is a practicing attorney who has extensive experience in legal forms of organization.
