Technical writing class praised by professional client
Sandra Hill, an assistant professor in the English department and head of its professional writing area, has lived up to her determination to redesign the technical writing classes and place service-learning at the core, as evidenced by recent client response.
Sara Johnson, marketing and development director of The Wellspring, a local service organization, offered feedback after one of the classes created a brochure for Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Johnson praised the students for handling real world constraints like professionals. She stated that the students' technical product produced a fresh result with a vibrant look.
"The text was also beautifully done and addressed the decision points that would lead a potential Big to consider volunteering," Johnson said in her client response. "[They] identified the key questions a prospect would have and addressed them in a way that will remove barriers to volunteers' participation."
Johnson pointed out that whether or not the students pursued a career in a marketing field, the experience they obtained from the class would increase their communication skills and provide them with an edge in any future employment.
"I'm so proud of my tech writing students," Hill said. "We did eight service-learning projects this semester and our community clients were pleased with their documents."
