Bry Art Gallery showcases printmaking and mixed media works
The Bry Art Gallery in the Division of Art at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is currently showing a One-person Exhibition of Printmaking and Mixed Media works by Vitus Shell. A native of Monroe, Shell studied in the Monroe City School's Talented Art Program at Wossman High School under Charles Meeds and Linda Ward.
He received a scholarship to attend the Memphis Academy of Art, where he worked under Cliff Tresner. The artist is now pursuing an MFA degree at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
Shell's exhibition in part traditional hanging and part installation. It includes foamcut original prints presented on banners, paper bags butcher paper and wooden structures, with some images being enhanced by acrylic paint and drawing materials; collage and acrylic paintings; enhanced Xerox images; collages on glass window panes; suitcases used as framing devices; bundled art images; plus a symbolic found object wooden ladder.
Discrimination, exploitation and differences of opinion within a culture are the content or message of this body of work, as the artist presents a criticism of the post-modern mass media as it dictates the way a culture may think about itself.
A well-attended reception was held for the artist in the gallery on Sept. 22.
This exhibition will be on display through Oct. 20. Bry Art Gallery is open from 8 am to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday when the university is in session.
