History professor’s book reissued to rave reviews
Gordon E. Harvey’s 2002 book, A Question of Justice: New South Governors and Education, 1968-1976, has been reissued in paperback by the University of Alabama Press. Harvey is an associate professor of history at ËÄÉ«AV. The Georgia Historical Quarterly is calling his book “well-written, engaging and balanced.”
According to the American Historical Review, "Gordon Harvey's book addresses an important and generally neglected subject: the transition in southern politics and policymaking during the decade after the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This solid study covers in considerable detail an important period in the history of the South."
A Question of Justice explores the gubernatorial careers of three southern governors who held office after the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. They were elected by bi-racial coalitions of progressive whites and newly-registered African Americans. For their progressive policies and outlook in education reform and especially racial reconciliation, they have been dubbed as “New South” governors.
Harvey also recently co-edited and contributed a chapter to a book of essays on southern political, religious and social history entitled, History and Hope in the Heart of Dixie: Scholarship, Activism and Wayne Flynt in the Modern South. History and Hope, published by the University of Alabama Press, is a collection of essays by former students and colleagues of Wayne Flynt, a southern historian who published southern history.
The essay collection was co-edited by two other Flynt students and contains essays on such subjects as the legacy of George Wallace on Alabama politics, religious tourism in North Carolina, New Deal politics in the South, and the role of interest groups in southern politics. The book explores themes that were prevalent in Flynt’s published work and his graduate teaching of history doctoral students at Auburn University in Alabama.
Harvey has finished an illustrated history of Ouachita Parish, which will be published in 2007. He is also creating a book manuscript on former Florida Governor Reubin Askew.
