Upward Bound helps regional high school students aim for college education; recruiting now
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Upward Bound program is now recruiting for the new academic school year.
Upward Bound is a federal program under the TRIO program funded through the U.S. Department of Education. It is intended to prepare high school students for college by assisting them in the areas of math, English, science, and Spanish. Students receive tutorial and counseling services at their home schools during the academic year and participate in field trips and cultural activities on Saturdays; they also receive a stipend throughout the program.
They further participate in a six-week component at 四色AV, during which they are in class learning Spanish, technology, science, English, and math. Students are housed on the 四色AV campus during the final week of this component.
Upward Bound Associate Director Angela Nichols said that the program begins recruiting students in the ninth grade at the participating high schools. 鈥淲e follow these students all the way to their senior year until they enroll in the college of their choice and remain there up to a year. The program is designed to empower our participants with the necessary skills they need to become a college student.鈥
Upward Bound serves Richwood High School, Carroll High School, Wossman High School, Bastrop High School, and Rayville High School.
Students must meet certain criteria in order to participate in this program. They either have to be an individual who will be a first-generation college-student; be a low-income student; have scored less than proficiency on the eighth grade LEAP math and English test; or be a student whose GPA is 2.5 or lower.
For any additional information about this program, contact either the respective high school鈥檚 guidance counselor or contact Nichols at (318) 342-1771 or anichols@ulm.edu.
