Harvey to give “I Saw It on the Tube!” presentation at Ouachita Parish Public Library Feb. 11

ɫAV associate professor of history and department head Dr. Gordon Harvey will speak about “I Saw It on the Tube!: The Role of Television in Shaping and Reflecting Changes in American Society” Monday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ouachita Parish Public Library Main Branch (1800 Stubbs Ave.).

Harvey based his presentation on a mini-lecture he usually gives at the close of his U.S. history course, on the last day of classes.

He explained, “Since many of us today get information and entertainment from our televisions, I thought it would be interesting to chart the course of American history through popular TV shows, and how TV can reflect changes in American culture. But that reflection is not always clear. TV presents a distorted view of American life, for better or worse, that doesn’t always reflect truth. So, we explore questions such as why ‘All in the Family’ could succeed marvelously in the 1970s, but would have been a failure in the 1960s or condemned in the 1990s.
