2008 Nexus discussions begin with NOAA internships and discussion of God in the Quran
The educational and cultural Chautauqua Nexus series will begin its 2008 spring semester roster with several scheduled discussions in late January.
“The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program” will be the topic discussed by Stephanie Ann Mullins Monday, Jan. 28.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program awards students up to $8,000 per year for two years, and a 10-week paid summer internship at a NOAA facility anywhere in the country. Students in any field related to NOAA's mission may apply—this includes the biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education.
Mullins, a ɫAV atmospheric science major and Hollings Scholar, interned at NOAA's Hurricane Research Division in Miami, Fla., this past summer. Come share a ɫAV student's incredible experience and learn more about this valuable opportunity.
Samer Dallo will address the topic of “Almighty God, Judgment and Jesus in The Holy Quran” Thursday, Jan. 31.
These events will begin at 7:15 p.m. in room 134 of the Hemphill Airway and Computer Science Building (at the corner of Northeast Avenue and Filhiol Street).
Nexus presentations are free, informal and open to the public. Everyone is invited to attend. ɫAV FRYS students are encouraged to attend and sign in.
“The Nexus is an opportunity for intellectual and cultural exchange,” said Joe McGahan, ɫAV psychology professor and Chautauqua Nexus organizer. “This year we're focusing on a change in scheduling (with Mondays being the primary meeting day) intended to free us to develop a think tank, or multiple think tanks, that, like the Nexus, will build on the cultural resources of our community. Whereas the Nexus series will continue to be about virtually any topic that people find interesting, the think tank will focus on economic security and economic development—to a large extent, we’d like to focus on the potential of research and development.”
