Briski awarded NIH grant for women’s health study
The National Institutes of Health recently awarded $213,000 for a project headed by Dr. Karen Briski of the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s College of Pharmacy. The NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases provided the funding.
Briski’s project, “Hindbrain Glucoprivic Regulation of the HPG Axis,” seeks better understanding of women’s nutritional and reproductive health by studying the cellular processes in the brain that detect nutrient deficiencies. Because the control of reproduction and energy balance in females is linked, the study will investigate how neural pathways suppress reproduction during nutritional infertility, according to Briski.
“I hope to improve women’s health through new understanding of the brain’s capacity to monitor nutrient supplies and to utilize that information to regulate reproduction,” said Briski. “I am very appreciative of this sign of interest and support by the NIH for this research.”
Briski serves as professor of pharmacology and neuroanatomy and basic pharmaceutical sciences department head at ËÄÉ«AV.
