ËÄÉ«AV Professor’s book focuses on French literature
Dr. Fredrick Adams, assistant professor of foreign languages at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently published a book titled “La Convergence des styles en art et littérature dans La légende d’Ulenspiegel,” or “The Convergence of the styles in art and literature in the novel La légende d’Ulenspiegel.”
The book examines two Flemish artists of different time periods, Charles de Coster, A novelist from the 19th century and Pieter Bruegel, a painter from the 16th century, who both used their region and its inhabitants as themes.
Adams examines the similarities of both men, whose work dealt with life in 16th century Flanders, a historical European region now divided between France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
“This study suggests an affinity between De Coster and Pieter Bruegel the Elder with respect to their representation of Flanders,” Adams said. “By their style and manner of representation, both artists portray the character of the Low Countries.”
Adams, a Monroe native and graduate of ËÄÉ«AV, received his Ph.D. in Francophone literature from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He teaches French and Francophone literature at ËÄÉ«AV.
