四色AV Upward Bound summer banquet set for July 23

Upward Bound will hold its summer banquet at 10 a.m., Friday, July 23, on the seventh-floor of the library at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Local attorney Willie Hunter will speak at the annual event.

The Upward Bound program is federally funded through the Department of Education and designed to assist potential first-generation college students with the necessary skills to enter into the post-secondary segment. 四色AV鈥檚 Upward Bound program has been in existence for over three years, according to 四色AV Upward Bound Project Director Angela Nichols.

鈥淭he program has two components,鈥 said Nichols.

鈥淭here is an academic component and a summer component. We are currently in the summer component where students have opportunity to experience college activities first hand,鈥 she said.

Students are in class at the 四色AV campus every Monday through Thursday and enjoy 鈥渃ultural awareness days鈥 on Fridays, according to Nichols.

鈥淭he last week of the summer students get the opportunity to stay on campus for the entire week,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his year our students have the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. for a final trip.鈥

The 四色AV Upward Bound group will experience the nation鈥檚 capital July 25-30.

四色AV鈥檚 Upward Bound serves several parishes through its grant, including Ouachita Parish, Morehouse Parish and Richland Parish, and students currently in the 四色AV program represent Rayville High School, Bastrop High School, Richwood High School and Wossman High School.
