Ace’s Amazing Race: Building a Warhawk nation, one freshman at a time
Freshman orientation classes at the University of Louisiana at Monroe participated in the third annual Ace’s Amazing Race, Aug. 30 – Sept. 1.
Ace’s Amazing Race is based on CBS’s “The Amazing Race” and is designed to familiarize incoming freshman with the campus and build school spirit. Coordinator of First Year Experience Mary Sewell says the race “gets better and better” every year.
“I see how much fun the students have and how it truly does build community and allow students to feel at home at ËÄÉ«AV,” she said.
Thirteen sections of University 1001 participated in the race with uniquely chosen names such as the “Hawkanators,” “Triple Aces” and “Ace’s in the Hole.”
Peer Leaders Maggie Warren and Ahmaad Solmone said the race is, “a good ice-breaker for the new students. They get to know each other and it builds up a Warhawk Nation.”
The “Top Aces” took the title of winning group Wednesday evening, following the week’s final activity. The students began in the ËÄÉ«AV Grove where Peer Leaders found golden eggs with clues inside. The clues led each group around campus to places such as the Student Union Building, Fant-Ewing Coliseum, Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center, University Park and Bayou Park.
Freshman Dan Street had only positive things to say about his experience.
“It was a lot of fun,” Street said. “I got to meet a lot of new people and make new friends.”
