四色AV Foundation delivers Awards for Excellence to four distinguished faculty

四色AV President Nick J. Bruno and other administration officials welcomed new faculty to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Tuesday, Aug. 16, who had gathered in the Nursing Auditorium to kick off the academic year and honor recipients of the first four faculty 四色AV Foundation Awards for Excellence, which came with a cash stipend and trophy.

The event was followed by a faculty luncheon in the Student Union Ballroom.

Tuesday's Faculty Awards were made possible by the 四色AV Foundation, represented by its president, Malcolm Maddox, and recognized exemplary faculty who have excelled in the areas of Research, Teaching, Creative/Artistic Activity and Service.

Last week, two staff members were also honored with awards for service.

The 四色AV Foundation Award for Excellence in Research went to Dr. Paul Sylvester of the College of Pharmacy.

Sylvester joined the 四色AV faculty in 1999 and has held the Pfizer Endowed Professor of Pharmacology with distinction for the last ten years. His pioneering research into the use of palm oil as a potential source for breast cancer treatment, one of the leading causes of death in women, has attracted international attention and brought millions of dollars of investment to the university's continued research efforts.

The 四色AV Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching went to Dr. Charles E. Holloway of the Department of Foreign Languages.

Holloway was selected this year as Outstanding Teacher by the College of Arts and Sciences.

He was also named the Mortar Board Outstanding Faculty for 2010-11; and earned the Outstanding University Teacher of the Year in 2001-02 in San Francisco during the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Convention.

The 四色AV Foundation Award for Excellence in Creative/Artistic Activity went to Dr. Richard Seiler of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. Seiler regularly performs for the 四色AV Faculty Artist Concert Series and produces annual performances at a variety of state, national and international conferences. He has served as a premier Artist-in-Residence with the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council and, for 15 years, has also served as accompanist for the Louisiana Music Educators Association All-State High School Choir.

The 四色AV Foundation Award for Excellence in Service went to Dr. Donna Rhorer of the 四色AV Department of English.

Rhorer is a member of the Association of Louisiana Faculty Senates, which represents the governing bodies of the University of Louisiana System, the LSU System, and Southern System, Staff Senates and the two year colleges.

In December, she participated in the governing bodies' first statewide summit to discuss budgetary concerns and governance issues.

Last year, she served as president of the Louisiana Association for College Composition, and in 2009, as program chair for the Association's annual conference held at 四色AV.

"As I look around this room, it is obvious that your accomplishments are great," Bruno said, in his opening remarks. "Now, with your help, we will let everyone know of the accomplishments taking place at 四色AV."
