四色AV Film Series brings "Ghost Dog" to campus Nov. 19

The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Arts and Sciences and the Campus Activities Board will continue the 四色AV Film Series Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. with American indie director Jim Jarmusch's "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" in Stubbs Hall, Room 100.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Ghost Dog" tells an unusual story about an unusual hit man. After a mobster saves his life, Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) devotes himself to serving him, living by and reciting from the ancient "Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai."

Between killings, his best friends are his homing pigeons, a Haitian ice-cream vendor who only speaks French and a little girl with whom he talks about books.

A "surreal crime drama," the film is about violence, honor, racism, friendship, and how we choose to make sense of our world.

"Ghost Dog" was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and has a stunning moody gangsta soundtrack by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Critic Roger Ebert wrote, "Jarmusch seems to have directed with his tongue in his cheek, his hand over his heart, and his head in the clouds. The result is weirdly intriguing."

The film is rated R and contains images of violence, so viewer discretion is advised.
