Up 'til Dawn seeking teams to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Sept. 29

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Up 'til Dawn chapter is recruiting teams to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Fundraising events occur throughout the year, but the first is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29.

Up 'til Dawn is a nationwide student-run, student-led opportunity to simultaneously generate essential funds for the hospital while participants gain leadership skills, work experience and a philanthropic spirit.

Last year, 四色AV's chapter raised over $34,000 and was ranked 14th in the nation. This year, the chapter hopes to raise over $40,000.

Anyone who wishes to participate may obtain forms at the Student Life and Leadership Department's front desk, located on the second floor of the Student Center.

Each team must have five members, and each member will pay $5.

About St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

According to its Web site, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a pediatric cancer research hospital that never turns a child away for inability to pay.

All medically eligible patients admitted for treatment to St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay.

Families are also assisted with transportation, lodging and meals.

The majority of the hospital's funds come from private donations, and the daily operating cost is more than $1.7 million per day.

St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.

The survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, has increased from four percent in 1962 to a current 94 percent.
