四色AV Film Series to show "Eve's Bayou" Feb. 7

In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Arts and Sciences and the Campus Activities Board will continue the 四色AV Film Series Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 8:30 p.m. with director Kasi Lemmon's "Eve's Bayou" (1997) in Stubbs Hall, Room 100.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Eve Bayou" takes place in 1962 and was filmed in and around Covington, Madisonville, and Napoleonville, Louisiana.

Eve (played by Jurnee Smollett, of "Friday Night Lights" and "Roll Bounce") is the young daughter of local doctor and philanderer Louis Batiste (Samuel L. Jackson). After Eve witnesses one of her father's indiscretions, their family life begins to fall apart.

Roger Ebert described the film as "a selection of memories, filtered through the eyes of a young girl who doesn't understand everything she sees . . . 'Eve's Bayou' studies the way that dangerous emotions can build up until something happens that no one is responsible for and that can never be taken back."

Ebert pronounced it "one of the very best films" of 1997. Director Lemmons won an "Outstanding Directorial Debut" award from the National Board of Review and a "Best First Feature" award from IFC's Independent Spirit. Six of the film's actors were nominated for Image Awards.

The film is rated R, and viewer discretion is advised.
