ËÄÉ«AV's Origination and HistoryÌýThrough Legislation

On September 28, 1931, the university opened for its first session as Ouachita Parish Junior College, which was operated as part of the Ouachita Parish School System. The inception of OPJC began in 1922. The challenge that Timothy Oscar Brown, Superintendent of Ouachita Parish Schools faced was lack of legislation that would effectively provide for the establishment and maintenance of a junior college. This problem was solved in May 1928, when the Louisiana State Legislature passed the Act 173 (LSA-R.S. 17:1380), which gave authority to parish school boards to create junior college districts and hold and conduct special elections to levy special taxes that would pay for costs associated with establishing a junior college. On November 29, 1928, Ouachita Parish School Board organized a Junior College District and called for special elections. On January 4, 1931, the School Board and the Police Jury held a joint session in which they purchased the site for the future college.

In 1934, Act 231 transferred control of Ouachita Parish Junior College to Louisiana State University A&M and established a "branch or center of learning" of the LSU. The Ouachita Parish Junior College became Northeast Center of Louisiana State University (Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University).

In1950, Acts 527-528 change the name of Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University to Northeast Louisiana State College, and transfer the administration and control of the college from LSU A&M to Louisiana State Board of Education.

In 1970, Act 142 authorizes a name change from Northeast Louisiana State College to Northeast Louisiana University. creates the University of Louisiana System, immediate governing body of the Northeast Louisiana University.

On August 27, 1999, Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System approved the last name change from Northeast Louisiana University to the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
