University of Louisiana Monroe President Dr. Ronald Berry awarded degrees to 669 graduates at the Summer and Fall 2024 commencement ceremonies on December 14, 2024. Two ceremonies were held for the four colleges: Arts, Education, and Sciences, Business and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, plus the Graduate School.

ËÄÉ«AV Dean endows second family scholarship to support veterans

On December 10, 2024, the ËÄÉ«AV Foundation held a check presentation to recognize the establishment of The George Pratte Memorial Veteran Scholarship to aid veterans and active-duty U.S. service members and their families in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree in the ËÄÉ«AV College of Arts, Education, and Sciences (CAES). Dr. John Pratte, Dean of CAES, established the $25,000 endowment with other members of the Pratte family to honor their father and his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. It joins a previous endowed scholarship, the Helen and Mimi Pratte Memorial Scholarship, that honors their mother and sister by making awards to non-traditional female students who are pursuing degrees in CAES.

2025 Miss ËÄÉ«AV and Mister ËÄÉ«AV crowned at annual titleholders competitions

The University of Louisiana Monroe recently crowned the 2025 Miss ËÄÉ«AV and Mister ËÄÉ«AV. The annual titleholders competitions were held on November 22 and 23, 2024. Lake Carpenter, 20, a pre-pharmacy senior from Start, La., was crowned Miss ËÄÉ«AV 2025, and Vincent Winston II, 19, a political science sophomore from Bastrop, La., was crowned Mister ËÄÉ«AV 2025.

ËÄÉ«AV history professor celebrates Polish-American leader at Buffalo Symposium

ËÄÉ«AV History Professor Chris Blackburn recently returned from Buffalo, New York, where he presented at a symposium commemorating the life and achievements of Dr. Francis Fronczak. Dr. Fronczak, a Polish-American physician born in Buffalo in 1874, was a pioneer in his field. He earned his M.D. in 1897, becoming the first Polish-American to do so. A dedicated public health advocate, he served as Buffalo's Health Commissioner and played a key role in WWI Polish war relief efforts. He represented the U.S. at numerous international medical conferences and, post-WWII, worked with the UN to aid Poland. Fronczak's legacy as a humanitarian and a champion of Polish-American relations endures.

The University of Louisiana Monroe will hold two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, December 14, 2024. Both ceremonies will be held in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The university will hold two separate ceremonies to honor the graduates of the four colleges:

ËÄÉ«AV announces P-40 Underdogs Pet Adoption and Training Center

The University of Louisiana Monroe announced plans for the creation of the P-40 Underdogs Pet Adoption and Training Center at a press conference on December 3, 2024. The future center will follow a mission to revolutionize human and animal interactions by building bridges between ËÄÉ«AV and the Northeast Louisiana community. The project's vision is to end dog and cat homelessness in Northeast Louisiana and establish ËÄÉ«AV as the pioneer in mental health awareness and support pet use.

Holidays at ËÄÉ«AV kicks off with tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 2

The University of Louisiana Monroe Campus Activities Board (CAB) is inviting the public to kick off the holiday season with the annual tree lighting ceremony on Monday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m.

The Holidays at ËÄÉ«AVfestivities will take place at Scott Plaza, adjacent to the ËÄÉ«AV Library. The event will be hosted by the newly crowned Miss ËÄÉ«AV Lake Carpenter, Mr. ËÄÉ«AV Vincent Winston II, and will feature performances from the ËÄÉ«AV Hawkline dance team and the ËÄÉ«AV Choir. President Ron Berry will offer remarks and light the tree.

ËÄÉ«AV presents Kaleidoscope: A Global Holiday Celebration on Dec. 3

DescriptionThe University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts is excited to announce "Kaleidoscope: A Global Holiday Celebration." The program is an immersive experience incorporating vocal and instrumental music, dance, and visual art.

Kaleidoscope will take place in Brown Theatre, 4001 Desiard St. in Monroe on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. This holiday season, the University of Louisiana Monroe (ËÄÉ«AV) and The Center for Children & Families are proud to announce a new partnership to support children in need through the Warhawks for Hope Christmas Project. ËÄÉ«AV students and faculty will come together to collect new toys, clothing, and money, bringing joy and warmth to children who have faced significant hardships, including abuse, neglect, poverty, and trauma. The University of Louisiana Monroe's annual Veterans Day Appreciation Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, in Scott Plaza, adjacent to the ËÄÉ«AV Library.

ËÄÉ«AV English professor translates science-and-literature research for the classroom

Imagine sitting down to analyze a poem in your college English class, then being handed a rock as well. That's what it's like taking a class with Dr. Patrick Morgan, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Louisiana Monroe. A lesson Morgan teaches on reading rocks and poetry has been published by Princeton University Press as a book chapter titled, "Rock Your Classroom," in The Pocket Instructor: Writing. This lesson stems from his larger commitment to interdisciplinary research, studying the connections between geology and literature, including two additional book chapters published recently by Oxford University Press.

The University of Louisiana Monroe held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first installation of the Louisiana State Mesonet, an interconnected network of instrumented weather monitoring stations. The ceremony was held on the ËÄÉ«AV campus at the mesonet site located adjacent to University Park on Bon Aire Dr. Special guest speakers included Louisiana District 5 U.S. Representative Julia Letlow, whose leadership helped secure the funding for the project, and Brad Bryant, Meteorologist-in-Charge for the National Weather Service in Shreveport.

Amwins, a leading national specialty insurance provider, recently recommitted its giving to the ËÄÉ«AV Risk Management and Insurance program, bringing its total donation commitment to $100,000 over 10 years.

A check presentation to commemorate the donation was held on September 17, 2024, in Hemphill Hall Room 208. Dr. Christine Berry, ËÄÉ«AV First Lady and the Kim Sledge Chair of Risk Management and Insurance, organized the event. "We were honored to be joined by David Lavins, President of Amwins Access, who was joined by Tammy Culmone, Executive Vice President and Regional Leader at Amwins Group who has led the relationship with ËÄÉ«AV for years," said Dr. Berry.

The ËÄÉ«AV WINGS Camp, a three-day program, was designed to provide essential support to incoming freshmen TRIO-SSS participants at ËÄÉ«AV as they prepare for the fall semester. The camp's primary goal was to help first-generation college students transition smoothly into university life by equipping them with the necessary tools, resources, and guidance to navigate their academic journey successfully.

Ellie Jenkins, DMA, Professor of Music at Dalton State College in Dalton, Georgia and Artist Affiliate in Horn at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, will present a recital on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall on the ËÄÉ«AV campus. The University of Louisiana Monroe held a press conference on August 21, 2024, to commemorate the installation of a new public art sculpture on its campus. The sculpture, titled Here We Go, was created by Kansas City artist Beth Nybeck. The 12-foot-tall steel sculpture has been installed next to Sandel Hall on Northeast Drive.

The University of Louisiana Monroe Honors Program received two awards at Pathways 2024, a national student success conference hosted by Suitable in Philadelphia, Pa. from July 24-26, 2024. Nominated for five awards, the two awards were for the FLIGHT Program, an experiential digital badging curriculum requiring students to master seven competencies essential to professional, personal, and social growth. Suitable is a software platform and app that assists universities in boosting student engagement outside the classroom.

The Murphy Family donated $60,000 to the ËÄÉ«AV College of Pharmacy to establish the T.D. "Doc" Murphy Superior Graduate Scholarship in Pharmacy in honor of Thomas Deckle Murphy, Class of 1962. The University of Louisiana Monroe and President Ron Berry received the prestigious Hattie Corbin Award for Excellence in Education. ËÄÉ«AV inaugural Cultural Arts Fellowship recipient to exhibit work at June Art Crawl

The inaugural recipient of the Cultural Arts Fellowship is Jansyn Jenkins, a junior double majoring in ceramics and psychology at ËÄÉ«AV. As a VAPA Cultural Arts Fellow, students are expected to contribute scholarship through creative works and extracurricular exhibitions/performances in city art spaces in partnership with a participating cultural arts organization. In Jansyn's case, this would be a partnership with the Black Creative Circle of North Louisiana.
Jansyn's work will be exhibited in the Sugar Gallery (131 Art Alley, Monroe) upstairs studio from June 2 through June 15, and there will be an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. during the June Art Crawl on June 6.

Warhawk Bundle streamlines experience for ËÄÉ«AV students

After two academic years of implementation, the Warhawk Bundle program continues to save money for ËÄÉ«AV students. In the fall semester of 2022, ËÄÉ«AV, in conjunction with Barnes & Noble Education, launched the Warhawk Bundle, a concierge service that allows students to have access to all their course materials before the first day of class at an average savings of 35-50%. Data provided by Barnes & Noble College (BNC) shows that ËÄÉ«AV students saved an estimated $982,860, or an average of 34%, in the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters using Warhawk Bundle.

ËÄÉ«AV to expand film and television production in northeast Louisiana with Entertainment Development Fund grant

The University of Louisiana Monroe is the latest recipient of a grant from the state's Entertainment Development Fund. The state university will receive $750,000 over three years to create opportunities for students interested in the film industry.

Specifically, the funds will support an in-house motion picture production studio at the Clarke M. Williams Innovation Campus, to complement the Film and Media Arts Concentration within the university's Communications Degree program. In addition, the studio will host filmmaking summer camps for high school students across the region.

ËÄÉ«AV English professor awarded prestigious ATLAS grant to complete book project

Dr. Patrick Morgan, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Louisiana Monroe, has received an ATLAS grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents. These Awards to Louisiana Artists and Scholars (ATLAS) are only given to a few scholars each year, and Morgan's project, titled, "Geological Reformations in 19th-Century American Letters," was awarded full funding at $39,111. The rigorous external review process determined that, out of all the proposals submitted by scholars throughout the state, Morgan's book project was ranked first.

The classic favorite musical "Fiddler on the Roof" will be performed on May 18 and May 19 by the Louisiana Opera and the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts on the ËÄÉ«AV campus in Brown Auditorium. International students create computer science workshop for ËÄÉ«AV TRIO ETS area schools

Naresh Chhetri and Abhishek Amgain, international students from Nepal, and computer science majors at ËÄÉ«AV, created a computer science workshop for high school freshmen as part of their work with the ËÄÉ«AV TRiO Programs. Pushkar Kandel, international student from Nepal and mathematics/actuarial science major, assisted with the creation of the workshop. All three have held campus jobs as tutors for ËÄÉ«AV's TRiO participants. On March 14, 2024, they presented the computer science workshop to TRiO staff and received excellent reviews. Chhetri and Amgain will now pilot the workshop in selected ninth-grade robotics, math, and science classrooms in TRiO Educational Talent Search's target area schools.

ËÄÉ«AV Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science Dr. Todd Murphy and students in the ËÄÉ«AV Atmospheric Science program traveled to Cabot, Ark., on Monday, April 8, to locate in the path of totality for an atmospheric boundary layer experiment during the total solar eclipse. ËÄÉ«AV was one of multiple atmospheric science groups in the field on Monday within the path collecting measurements on how the abrupt decrease in solar radiation would impact the lower part of the atmosphere called the boundary layer.

This year, ËÄÉ«AV Art Program's Coordinator Megan Smith hosted a ceramic bowl-making day to support the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana's Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser.

With the purchase of a ticket to Empty Bowls, attendees will get to take home a handmade bowl to serve as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana. The event was hailed by the Ceramics concentration Bachelor of Fine Arts alumni, and has been supported by ËÄÉ«AV for all eight years of the event's existence.

ËÄÉ«AV Math students attend annual meeting and competition

Eight ËÄÉ«AV students enjoyed the opportunity to attend the annual meeting of the Louisiana-Mississippi section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in New Orleans, LA from February 29 through March 2, 2024. Students attended a Career Panel highlighting the many opportunities for mathematics majors post-graduation, participated in workshops on mathematical modeling and data science, attended talks focused on applications of mathematics to problems in hydrology, data science, fluid dynamics, and logic, and networked with faculty, professional mathematicians, and other students from the region.

LDCC and ËÄÉ«AV collaborate to deliver medical science lab career pathways

In a continued effort to bridge the bayou, Louisiana Delta Community College and the University of Louisiana Monroe will share resources to jointly deliver instruction for medical lab science career pathways. At LDCC, the 65-credit-hour Medical Laboratory Technicians Program includes certifications or exit points as a phlebotomist, a medical lab assistant, and terminating as a medical lab technician. Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn an associate of applied science degree. Students will then be eligible to seamlessly enter ËÄÉ«AV's medical lab science bachelor's degree program. After successfully completing thirty hours online at ËÄÉ«AV, students will graduate with their bachelor's degree in medical lab sciences.

The Entrepreneurship Pelican Cup competition has announced the finalist teams for the 2024 competition. The 17h Annual Wine Over Water hosted by the University of Louisiana Monroe Alumni Association is set for 7:00-10:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. Established as a signature event at ËÄÉ«AV, Wine Over Water will be on the ËÄÉ«AV bridge over tranquil Bayou Desiard on Northeast Drive.

The University of Louisiana Monroe Emily Williamson Laboratory School (EWLS) invites the public to "A Glimpse of the Future," a celebration and silent auction showcasing the school's achievements and its rebuilding and expansion project. U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow secures $1 million in community project funding for collaboration between ËÄÉ«AV and City of Monroe

Louisiana District 5 Congresswoman Julia Letlow announced that she has secured $37.39 million in community project funding for the Fifth District of Louisiana. As part of the funding package, $1 million will go toward a collaboration between the University of Louisiana Monroe and the City of Monroe for entrepreneurial expansion and a business incubator.

The Hawkeye staff earn honors at Southeast Journalism Conference

The staff of ËÄÉ«AV's student-run newspaper, The Hawkeye, joined student journalists from twenty-five universities at the Southeast Journalism Conference 2024 on February 23-25, 2024, at Troy University in Troy, Ala. Editors and contributors participated in professional sessions and on-site competitions over the two-day event. The University of Louisiana has named Wendy Bailes, Ph.D., RN, the new Dean of the College of Health Sciences, pending University of Louisiana System board approval.

ËÄÉ«AV kinesiology professor Dr. William Hey recently co-authored an international article in the Journal of Pedagogical Research along with instructor Jessica Reynolds.

The research title is "Studying U.S. college faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic: Perceptions of severity, concerns, sources of information, preventive behaviors, barriers to work performance, and impact on work productivity." The study examines U.S. college faculty perceptions of and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ËÄÉ«AV Station Archaeologist, Dr. Diana Greenlee, has been named to the Explorers Club 50 Class of 2024 for her achievements at the Poverty Point World Heritage Site.

The Explorers Club 50 chose to honor Dr. Greenlee because of her dedication to preserving the 3,400-year-old earthworks site and encouraging public knowledge surrounding Poverty Point's historical significance. Dr. Greenlee was nominated by Dr. Richard Wiese, the President Emeritus and Explorers Club 50 Chair.

On Friday, February 2, 2024, ËÄÉ«AV hosted the KidWind Challenge, a renewable, wind energy learning experience sponsored by Pattern Energy Group and held at Bayou Pointe Event Center. Three ËÄÉ«AV wildlife biology students recently had their first duck hunting experience thanks to a partnership with Delta Waterfowl. The University Hunting Program provides students with first-hand experience of hunting culture and wildlife management. Atmospheric Science students present at national conference, meet with Congresswoman Letlow

Six students from the University of Louisiana Monroe Atmospheric Science program, along with Associate Director of the School of Sciences Dr. Todd Murphy, attended the 104th American Meteorological Society's (AMS) Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD from January 27 - February 1, 2024. The AMS Annual Meeting is the largest meeting with a direct focus on weather, water, and climate, with thousands of people in attendance, taking part in more than 40 scientific conferences and symposia. The theme of this year's meeting was "Living in a Changing Environment".

The University of Louisiana Monroe is hosting a "FAFSA Frenzy" Open House on Monday, February 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. FAFSA Frenzy is a free event to help high school and transfer students fill out their FAFSA applications. ËÄÉ«AV Chief Innovation and Research Officer John Sutherlin, Ph.D. has published the third book in what he calls his "environmental trilogy." Hog Wash: The Strange Case of SSA Global chronicles the efforts of a group of international environmentalists, investors, and researchers as they attempt to find an ecologically friendly process to clean up the toxic waste pouring into lakes, rivers, and streams from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs.)

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18, but all classes for the day have been cancelled.

ËÄÉ«AV Dining Services, including Schulze Cafeteria and the HUB, will be open for regular hours on Thursday, January 18.

Students are advised to check their course syllabi on Moodle.

ËÄÉ«AV employees are encouraged to exercise caution when traveling. Employees unable to safely commute to campus should contact their supervisor for further instructions.

ËÄÉ«AV closing campus Jan. 16-17 due to winter weather

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to the latest inclement winter weather forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Schulze Dining Hall will be open with limited hours from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 - Wednesday, Jan. 17. The ËÄÉ«AV Activity Center will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, but will open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 for members only, no guests. The ËÄÉ«AV Library, the HUB (including Starbucks), PODs, and the ËÄÉ«AV Bookstore will be closed Monday through Wednesday and will resume regular hours on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The ËÄÉ«AV Food Pantry located inside the Activity Center will be open on Sunday, Jan. 14 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
